From everyone at the Buncombe County Democratic Party, we wish you all a safe and happy Fourth of July!
On this day, we celebrate the Declaration of Independence and the beginning of our journey towards a more perfect union, which we find ourselves still striving for. In light of the daily news cycle and the near constant attacks on democratic norms by majorities in Raleigh and Washington, days like today remind us why the work we do is so important.
Below are a few sentences from President Barack Obama’s weekly address on July 4th, 2013. President Obama reminded us then, as we must remember today, that it is our collective responsibility to live up to the promise of our founding documents.
“Generations of Americans made our country what it is today – farmers and teachers, engineers and laborers, entrepreneurs and elected leaders – people from all walks of life, from all parts of the world, all pulling in the same direction.
And now we, the people, must make their task our own – to live up to the words of that Declaration of Independence, and secure liberty and opportunity for our own children, and for future generations.”
