An Invitation to Join the New Hispanic Outreach Committee
In Buncombe County, there are almost 5,000 registered voters who identify themselves as Hispanic, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans by an almost 4-to-1 margin. Only 1,680 of all those registered actually voted in last year’s general election, so it’s clearly time for us to encourage more listening to the concerns among our Hispanic neighbors.
Carlos Linares (Precinct 44.1) has agreed to convene our first meeting for a Hispanic Outreach Committee, so please consider joining us. Carlos shares his deep appreciation for our democracy and a recognition that we are living in perilous times:
The immigrants of today are just like the immigrants of yesterday – we always come to the United States to live in freedom and to prosper.
I remember the values and ideals that my father embedded in me as a kid about the United States. But the country that he spoke of has changed, and we can change that.
We can’t take the dream of “America” for granted anymore. We must fight for it. Lies, misinformation, and misogyny are taking over. We want to live in freedom, not to be ruled by a dictator. As immigrants, we fled dictatorships. I witnessed an election stolen by a dictatorship. The method used by the ruling military party to steal the election was to send soldiers to confiscate the ballot boxes and replace them with boxes stuffed with votes for the ruling party. Trump and his cronies spent days weighing the benefits of using our military to seize voting machines!
Many of our Hispanic brothers and sisters escaping fascism are not participating in the democratic process. Hispanics are Democrats – they just don’t know it.
We are organizing to reach out to the Hispanic community. Join us by signing up to attend our first meeting of the BCDP Hispanic Outreach Committee at BCDP Headquarters on Thursday, July 27th.
