Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (BCDP Weekly)
In early July of 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into federal law, surrounded by prominent Black leaders and civil rights activists including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., A. Philip Randolph, Dr. Dorothy Height, and more. The Civil Rights Act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, and it laid the foundation for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
This anniversary is a reminder that this landmark law is within living memory for many Americans, and we march forward carrying the torch to continue the fight for freedom, equality, and justice for everyone.
Update: Dance Event Canceled
With so many people away on vacation or otherwise busy this summer, and so much to do now for our local Democratic candidates, we've regretfully decided to cancel the Dance for Democracy that was scheduled for July 18th. Instead, we're shifting our efforts to voter outreach, canvassing, phone banking and organizing to make sure that voters know why it's vital for them to come out and vote the whole ballot blue!
If you purchased Dance tickets and want to receive a refund, email Denise@buncombedems.org. If you do not want a refund, we gratefully thank you for your donation and will use it to fund BCDP's ongoing work to get Dems elected in 2024!
Take Action - Reach Voters One on One
Do you sometimes wonder why we're so persistent in asking you to join our door knocking (canvassing) and phone banking efforts? Because research shows they work! Voters need to hear from you and have a conversation that acknowledges their concerns and reinforces the values they share with Democrats.
We make it easy and fun! If you haven't done it before, now is a great time. Sign up for canvassing here or visit buncombedems.org/calendar -- we'll provide all training and materials.
Some thoughts on why our volunteers love canvassing:
A great short video from a familiar face: Prather Loves Canvassing
"Canvassing is the best way to meet our neighbors and have a dialogue ... it's also the best way to connect them to our Precinct so that when they give me their email, they get invited to all the fun stuff we do. I often get a "thank you for your hard work" which makes me know I'm making a difference. " -- Diane
Another wonderful, heartfelt brief video: Robert Loves Canvassing
"Exercise, fresh air and politics. What’s not to love? Plus, it works!" -- Kelly
Want your quote on why you love canvassing and/or phoning to possibly be featured in a future newsletter? Email your short (less than a minute) video or a few sentences to terri@buncombedems.org
