Summer Is Heating Up

Although the weather outside is mild, North Carolina politics are heating up. Here's a roundup for ya.

Buncombe County Schools Board of Education

HB 66, which would create districts for school board elections in Buncombe County and bring partisan elections to school boards in several other counties, has passed 68-47 in the NC House. This bill is designed solely to make it easier for candidates with unpopular and extreme views to get elected in Buncombe County. There is bi-partisan opposition to this legislation in Buncombe – in fact, the only elected official in the county who supports this bill is Senator Daniel.

This bill will change the districts used for Buncombe County Board of Education away from ones that mirror school attendance zones to ones drawn for political convenience and was unanimously opposed by the Buncombe County Board of Education.

Show Up for Rep. Edwards' Buncombe 'Crime Summit'

As his recent comments showed, Representative Edwards doesn't think very highly of Buncombe County. Edwards has doubled down on his comments at a forum about the closure of the Canton paper mill where he said that Buncombe County should "get the needles off the streets, get a DA in place and prosecute criminals to reduce crime and not allow the spill over into our haven over here" by announcing a summit to talk about "crime in Asheville and Buncombe" this Friday, June 16. Show up and make sure that all perspectives on criminal justice reform and policing are represented in the room, not just conservative voices or folks with a political agenda.

The event is taking place at AB-Tech's Ferguson Auditorium at 12:30 p.m. Show up and make sure your Congressman hears your voice, too.
