The Resistance Begins!
Donald Trump's inauguration this week has brought us the virtual certainty of instability, challenges and dangers to our democracy.
We've had some time to reflect on our losses at the Federal level (while celebrating state and local wins). Now it's time to gather our resources and find ways to stand up against new threats. Here are a few ideas to get us started:
-- Check to see if you are one of the 60,000 voters being challenged. Republican Jefferson Griffen, who lost the NC Supreme Court election by more than 700 votes, is hoping to unseat Democratic Justice Allison Riggs by tossing out votes! To see if you are affected, visit: Vote Query. If your vote is being challenged, contact the Buncombe County Board of Elections. Tell them you are on Griffin’s challenge list and want to know what is missing or unverified on your voter registration record and how can you fix it.
-- Join Senator Julie Mayfield and the BCDP on January 24, 7pm, at the Orange Peel for a "Raise the Roof" dance party fundraiser! This event kicks off our effort to break the Republican supermajority in the NC Senate and raises money for the Buncombe Democrats so we can repair and strengthen our physical base of operations. While businesses cannot donate to political campaigns, individuals and businesses can donate to the Buncombe Democratic Party’s building fund. To make a donation directly to that fund rather than to the event, please use this link: DONATE TO THE BCDP.
A Message from BCDP Interim Chair Kristen Robinson
Dear Fellow Democrats,
It is my true honor to serve as your interim Chair. As a proud Western North Carolina native who owes much to the greats like Jim Hunt, Liston B. Ramsey, Martin Nesbitt, and others, I know the importance of this role and our party.
My earliest political memories are attending Madison County Democratic Party meetings with my grandmother. A lifelong teacher, for years there wasn’t a soul in Madison County who didn’t know her! We were raised to care about our neighbors, work for our community—and, of course, be a good Democrat.
I understand that I am stepping into the role at an important time. Not only are we rebuilding our community here in Western NC after being tested by Helene, but in many ways we are rebuilding our party after a tough 2024 cycle. While Buncombe did its job—carrying local races and helping achieve statewide victories—we still have much work ahead to make sure we are able to deliver for the people.
2025 is a critical year for Democrats: it’s a time to build momentum, to strengthen our organizing efforts, and to hold several municipal seats in Buncombe County. In 2026 we will have the U.S. Senate election, an opportunity to flip NC-11, NC General Assembly races, and several Court races to win.
Winning will require Buncombe Democrats to keep building on our efforts from last cycle, while continuing to find new ways to meaningfully and intentionally engage our community members.
My first request to you is to remain committed to building our party—both figuratively and literally! The longevity of our headquarters is directly tied to the longevity of our party, and we need your help to ensure its future. That’s why I’m asking you to attend or donate to our Raise the Roof fundraiser, hosted by Senator Julie Mayfield who is splitting the proceeds with BCDP.
By securing a new roof for our headquarters, we’re not just preserving a building; we’re reinforcing a vital center for our party and our community—a place where all voices are welcomed and empowered. Join us in making this vision a reality by contributing today. If you don’t feel like dancing right now, we appreciate donations in any amount.
I thank you for helping us organize, reach out, and commit resources to protecting our rights, our future and our Democracy.
In this together,
Kristen Robinson
Election for BCDP Chair, Provisional 1st Vice-Chair, and State Executive Committee
We are planning an election on February 15th at our Monthly Meeting starting at 10am at BCDP Headquarters. The Chair position became open when Kathie Kline, to whom we are so grateful, stepped down. The State Executive Committee (SEC) vacancies are due to some members becoming unable to serve.
The BCDP election will be chaired by Second Vice Chair Denise Marecki, as our Interim Chair, Kristen Robinson, is running for the Chair position. Those eligible to vote in this election will receive notification with relevant information on the process prior to the meeting.
For information on the requirements and duties for these positions, see the NC Democratic Party Plan of Organization. If you wish to run for any of these positions, please contact Denise Marecki at denise@buncombedems.org.
